Windows 7 and Parallels 5: Activation issues
I have an iMac 27 (Core i5, 4GB, Snow Leopard). Using Bootcamp, I also installed Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) on this machine.
I want to run Windows virtualized (via Parallels 5) as well, using the installation on the Bootcamp partition.
Setting this up is all very straightforward. First make sure Windows is installed properly on the Bootcamp partition. You can safely activate Windows on this partition once it’s installed.
Reboot back into OSX, then download and install Parallels 5. Tell it to use the Bootcamp partition.
Hopefully you now have a working virtualized Windows too. After a few days, Windows will start nagging about it not being activated. I read many topics about the activation process in this case, but no clear answers. It seems like you cannot officially run a native and a virtualized copy of Windows 7 on the same machine using 1 product key, however I will prove otherwise.
Eventually I just followed the on-screen instructions of the Activation alert, and (re)activated Windows by phone. You need to punch in a series of numbers, the response consists of another series of numbers you need to type in. It’s an automated process, there’s no person to ask tricky questions. After I activated Windows by phone, it was successfully activated in the Virtualized environment as well.
After rebooting into Windows native (Bootcamp), I can confirm that Windows is still properly activated there as well.
Next up: Office 2007… It also suffers from activation woes…
